Dr. Fruchtman O.D. co-manages both cataract and Lasik surgery in New Jersey.
If you are over 60 and your vision has become permanently blurred, you may have cataracts. In fact, cataracts are the most common cause of vision loss in people over age 40. And it is the leading cause of blindness worldwide.
Cataracts are a degenerative form of eye disease in which proteins in the eye clump together and affect vision. The eye lens progressively becomes opaque and vision is further blurred. Cataracts can occur in one or both eyes. Without treatment, this condition is permanent and can lead to total blindness.request an appointment
Risk factors for cataracts include the following:
- Ultraviolet radiation from sunlight and other sources
- Prolonged use of corticosteroid medications
- Statin medicines
- Previous eye injury or inflammation
- Previous eye surgery
- Hormone replacement therapy
- Substantial alcohol consumption
- High myopia
- Family history
Initially, our patients find improved vision through the use of glasses, strong bifocals, magnification, and lighting or other eyesight aids. Once the cataracts have progressed to the point of major eyesight impairment, it’s time to consider cataract surgery.
Nine out of 10 people experience their vision as successfully restored (between 20/20 and 20/40) after cataract surgery. Cataract surgery is a very common procedure. More than three millions Americans undergo cataract surgery each year. Our patients find the procedure to be relatively pain free.
